Food recommendations for sightseeing in Miyajima

It was really hot that day, so visiting Itsukushima Shrine, we went into a coffee shop to "rest our feet and rehydrate".

This coffee shop was on my radar before I went to Miyajima.

Itsuki Coffee

Itsuki Coffee sells and serves coffee beans roasted directly by the owner, who is particular about not only the beans but also the roasting process.

Moreover, they only sell "specialty coffee" beans.

Specialty coffee" refers to beans that are grown on farms that have been identified and evaluated for their high quality, but only 5% of the world's coffee market is made up of such beans, making them extremely valuable ✨.

I'm a coffee lover, so this was a place I had to visit when I came to Miyajima!

The atmosphere of the store is simple, clean, and relaxing.

There is the store's coffee machine ☕️and in front of it is the coffee recommendation of the day.

Since it was a hot day, I got an iced coffee and an iced au lait with coffee jelly underneath☕️

The iced coffee was refreshing and easy to drink, as if it was made for a hot day, and when I put it in my mouth, the aroma was strong and pleasant to the nose.

The iced coffee was easy to drink and the aroma was clear to the nose when you put it in your mouth, but there was no bitter taste left after drinking.

The coffee jelly in an iced au lait also went down well. The coffee jelly was especially delicious ✨.

Coffee jelly is generally a bit heavy, isn't it?

The coffee jelly at Itsuki Coffee was soft and refreshing, and could easily be sucked through a straw.

Therefore, the boundary between the texture of the drink and the jelly is very slight and easy to drink.

But the jelly has a strong presence. It was a drink I had never had before.

I recommend it for a little rest after a day of sightseeing. And if you like coffee, try "Itsuki Coffee" at least once.

I asked the lady at Itsuki Coffee what she recommended for lunch. She recommended the "Conger eel rice" !

She told me "Anagome-meshi Fujitaya" is the best place in Miyajima.

We walked to Fujitaya as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, it was closed that day.

I changed my mind and decided to take the ferry back to "Miyajima-guchi" .

Because, there is also an old shop of Conger eel rice restaurant at "Miyajima-guchi". I had checked with the lady at "Itsuki Coffee" in case it was closed .

"Ueno" for Conger eel rice

It is said that this long-established restaurant is so famous that it is called "Ueno" when it comes to Conger eel rice

.

Not only Hiroshima residents, but even people from outside of the prefecture know this restaurant well!

It is said that Ueno started selling Conger eel rice as a station bento(lunch box) when Miyajima Station was built in 1897, which is 125 years of history!

We entered the store, but since this is a popular store, there is often a waiting line if you go during lunch time. We arrived a little before noon, so we didn't have to wait long to be seated!

Seat reservations are not available, so if you want to try Conger eel rice, we recommend you to go early.

If you want to try the Conger eel rice, I recommend you get there early. The restaurant will end as soon as the conger eel rice is gone.

Here is the menu

There are three types of Conger eel rice (small, medium, and  extra large), and you can have a large serving of rice.

We had the basic size, "medium"!

By the way, the "small" is 3/4 and the "large" is 5/4, indicating how much rice is served in relation to the "medium" basic size.

It is a simple way to cook the Conger eel, just grilling it to take advantage of the fat in the Conger eel. The fish was really fluffy.

I got the "medium" one and it was a generous portion.

It seems that the price will increase from September 2022 due to the difficulty in getting sea eel in recent years and the rising cost of raw materials.

Please check the official website for more information.

Looks like you used to be able to eat conger eel meal for 30 sen bery long years ago.

There is a big sign in front of the restaurant so you can easily recognize it.

Itsuki coffee the terrace

And last but not least, we recommend "Itsuki Coffee" the terrace.

What? Isn't "Itsuki Coffee" said on Miyajima Island? Some of you may be thinking, "Oh, no, that's right!

Yes, it is the same "Itsuki Coffee" that we went to in Miyajima.

However, they have different menus depending on the store, so I decided to go there again at Miyajima-guchi. ☕️

When the shopkeeper at Miyajima's "Itsuki Coffee" handed me my receipt, she said, "If you show your receipt, you can get a 200 yen discount, even if you go to a different store on the same day.

What a generous discount! I thought, and decided to give it a try.

Then he really gave me a 200 yen discount ✨ and for each one of us!

Thank you very much.

And I enjoyed the coffee jelly with soft serve ice cream on top, which they didn't have at their Miyajima location!

Each store has a different atmosphere, so there are many ways to enjoy Itsuki Coffee. ☕️

In addition to the two stores introduced here, there is another Itsuki Coffee store in Hiroshima City. I highly recommend "Itsuki Coffee" when you visit Hiroshima ✨.

Access to Miyajima

I took the JR line to Miyajima for sightseeing this time.

I thought about taking the "Hiroshima Electric Railway", but it takes twice as long as JR because it runs through the center of the city and stops at each station.

The JR train takes about 30 minutes from Hiroshima Station to Miyajima-guchi Station.

Then, about "Miyajima-guchi Station", walk a little to the sea side and you will arrive at the ferry terminal for "Miyajima".

It takes about 5 minutes on foot.

It was a beautiful sunny day, scorching hot the sky was exceptionally blue!

It's time to get on the ferry and go to Miyajima!

When we got off the ferry, it was Miyajima.

Miyajima, to Itsukushima Shrine

Miyajima is one of the three most scenic spots in Japan, and there are stone monuments all over the place.

Unfortunately, it is under construction. ⚠️

In these days of coronas, purification must be "alcoholic!"

Unfortunately, we could not see the torii gate. But that's another precious experience!

Walking around the island, you can feel the atmosphere ✨.

There are also deer on Miyajima. I got the feeling that they are much more wary of humans than the deer in Nara.

I tried not to disturb the deer while watching them from a distance...

From Miyajima

On the way back to Hiroshima City, I took the Hiroshima Electric Railway from Miyajimaguchi, swaying slowly on the train.

When I was just in Hiroshima, the Hiroden Miyajima-guchi Station was under construction, but this station seems to be in use now.
